Helping you to pick perfectly fitted bras.

At mumsthewordmaternity.co.uk we understand how important it is to be wearing a well-fitted maternity bra both during and after your pregnancy. As early as four to eight weeks into your pregnancy your breasts may start to feel tender. This is when you start to need extra support. Maternity bras are designed to help to prevent the ligaments in the breast from being overstretched. By supporting the delicate tissues of your breast, you will also be helping to ensure that you return to your usual shape.

All mumsthewordmaternity.co.uk maternity bras are designed to provide you with superb comfort and support. Buy separate bras for day and night – time to ensure proper support. Fashion bras do not provide adequate support in pregnancy. Health professional strongly recommend that under-wired bras should not be worn when you are pregnant or nursing your baby.

Why it’s important to get the right fit

  • There are no muscles in the breast – just a small muscle above.
  • The breast contains only ligaments.
  • The breast may increase by up to 2lb during pregnancy.
  • You may increase more than two bra sizes during your pregnancy.
  • You need to be measured for your nursing bra two to three weeks before the birth.
  • Bear in mind that after the baby is born your rib cage measurement (1 below) will decrease a little.

So what is your size?

To find your BRA SIZE, first measure your rib cage in inches (1) wearing a bra whilst doing so and ensuring the tape measure doesn’t slide down at the back. Add 4" to an even number and 5" to an odd number (see chart below) Tip: Do not breathe in. This expands the rib cage and does not give a relaxed measurement.

Keep in mind, however, that determining your bra and cup size is not an exact science. If you find you should be wearing a 34 C, but a 32 B fits you better, obviously get the more comfortable one!

Which type of bra should I buy?

Support bras: Essential for mums-to-be. Designed to support your breasts as they get heavier with a deep centre at the front, and broader straps, back and sides to give extra support for active daywear.

Nursing bras: For when baby arrives and essential if breastfeeding. With wider sides, back and straps, easier fastening, soft cotton linings, drop-cup opening, and adjustable straps to create extra room. It’s best to be flexible, allowing extra room for when the milk comes in, as well as when your breast reduce in size.

Sleep bras: For pre-and post-birth. Sleep bras give light support and seam-free styling, so providing perfect night time comfort. Ideal for during night time breastfeeding, when you may be feeling particularly uncomfortable. In addition they have the added benefit of holding breast pad in place while you sleep.
